Christian music news: Michael W. Smith to headline concert at riverfront bandshell

Latest christian music:

Prayer and patriotism will come together Saturday night on Davenport's riverfront.

"A Night to Honor Our Heroes" at the LeClaire Park bandshell is a Christian concert headlined by nationally known singer Michael W. Smith. Veterans can get free tickets to the event at several locations.

The concert came together quickly, said Kathryn Bohn, Davenport, who is one of the organizers. Smith committed to the concert two months ago.

"As I've said, 'God has our back on this,'" she said. "It is one of the most incredible things I've been involved with, and the concert hasn't even happened yet."

The organization started slowly after Bohn had the inspiration to put on a concert saluting veterans and active military after a visit by President George W. Bush during the 2004 campaign.

"Because I wasn't in the military, I couldn't get any support," she said.

Watching evangelist John Hagee's television program, Bohn saw the person she needed to get involved, retired Lt. Gen. Leroy Sisco, the chief executive officer of the Military Warriors Support Foundation.

"When I met the three-star retired general, doors started opening," she said.

Sisco praised Bohn and the Quad-Cities for its patriotism. His organization will receive money raised at the concert.

"Hope is the biggest thing you can give (wounded soldiers)," Sisco said. "Hope can provide an opportunity."

Military Warriors Support Foundation provides academic scholarships, workforce re-training and job placement assistance. The foundation also provides recreational opportunities and counseling.
